Carla’s Friday Five: January 24, 2020

,

It’s time for another “episode” of Carla’s Friday Five, where I share with you the things I’m reading, thinking, and drinking! It’s been a long, moderately chilly week here, so I’ve been spending a lot of time curled up under a blanket sitting at my desk with the heater blowing on me full blast!

Without further ado, here are my five favorites from this week.

BOOK – Sacred Rest by Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith

I’m notorious for pushing myself until I can’t go anymore, so when I’m more reasonable about my expectations, I don’t understand why I’m still so tired and strung out! Turns out there’s more than just one kind of rest, and we need all of them to be healthy, happy, productive human beings. Far more practical than “woo woo”, this book talks about the different kinds of rests, the different kinds of gifts that can recharge us, and provides a quiz at the end to find out where you’re deficient. Turns out that I’m not crazy to think the things that are supposed to be relaxing just feel like more work at the end of the day. If you ever find yourself struggling to get through your days and nights, this book might be a lifesaver.

ALBUM – Nouveau Flamenco by Ottmar Liebert

I love flamenco guitar, and in particular, I’ve loved Ottmar Liebert ever since I saw him play live in Southern California over twenty years ago. He’s come out with many albums since then, but his original, Nouveau Flamenco will always be my favorite. At once calming and soul-stirring, it can instantly turn around a bad day. “2 The Night” is my favorite song on the album (and incidentally, the one my son auditioned for orchestra with) but “Lonely Hours” is a close second.

TV SHOW – The Great British Baking Show on Netflix

This might be an “oh duh” for everyone—of course someone who writes food fiction watches The Great British Baking Show! However, I watch less than an hour of TV a night, so despite having devoured the first two seasons when they were available in America, I’m way way behind. With all the stress of recent weeks, I found that the quiet tone and good-natured competition to be far more soothing than the standard Food Network offering and I quickly plowed through Series 3. I’m not sure how I’m going to fare when I get to Series 7 without Mary Berry, Sue Perkins, and Mel Giedroyc, but as long as I’ve got Paul Hollywood, I may be able to muddle through.

DRINK – Indian Haldi Dood (Turmeric Milk)

You know how I mentioned that chilly week? I’ve been walking out the door to pick up my kids (a process that takes me about 2 hours door to door and involves two schools with two different release times, ugh!) with a hot drink in my travel mug. Couple that with my older son being determined to share his cold, and it’s time to break out the Indian cure-all: turmeric milk. There are many ways to make it… my personal dairy-free recipe is available in Coffee House Favorites, the free e-book I’m giving away with every preorder of The Solid Grounds Coffee Company. Click here for more details.

RECIPE – Paleo Pumpkin Muffins by Gluten Free Homemaker

Three out of four members of my family eat paleo, so I’m always looking for quick and easy breakfast recipes. Of all the paleo muffin recipes I’ve tried, this one (linked above) is by far the best—not too greasy, with a texture that approximates a wheat flour bakery muffin, and a great pumpkin spice flavor! Best yet, there’s none of the egg separating, two individual bowls nonsense that goes on with a lot of paleo/gluten-free recipes. It takes me less than 10 minutes to mix, 25 minutes to bake, and then I’ve got pumpkin muffins for the rest of the week. (Also, it makes me feel like maybe the holidays aren’t completely over.)

I hope you enjoyed my discoveries from this week! Just as a reminder, the launch of The Solid Grounds Coffee Company is only about ten days away, so there’s still time to get your copy and have it delivered on release day. Plus, if you preorder, you get a free coffee-house drinks cookbook! Win-win!

Carla’s Friday Five: January 17, 2020

,

Hey, friends! I’m starting something new this month on the Fridays that I don’t have a blog guest, and I’m calling it Carla’s Friday Five. I get a lot of people asking me for recommendations on everything from books to recipes, so each week I’m going to share the top five things I’ve come across, done, or purchased.

Lest you think it’s my own brilliant idea, it’s a total rip off of Tim Ferriss’s Friday email where he does the same thing… but on the upside, you don’t have to subscribe to anything to get mine. 😊

So here we go!

BOOK – Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard of this book, but you may not have picked it up. Reviews seem to vary wildly between “best book ever written” and “most unlikable characters ever.” Personally, I thought it was delightful. Eleanor is a quirky POV character, to say the least, but as the book continues, you begin to realize exactly why she is the way she is and root for her to break out of her lonely, ordered life. There is some strong language at the end on the part of another character, but overall the material is clean. (Even if there is a rather hilarious episode involving a bikini wax…)

PODCAST – Gary Keller (CEO of Keller Williams) on The Tim Ferriss Show

Speaking of Tim Ferriss above, I’m a big fan of his podcast, which features interviews with “world class performers” on their secrets to success. Even if you’re not interested in real estate, anyone with an entrepreneurial bent will enjoy this conversation with Gary Keller, CEO of Keller Williams, the world’s largest real estate firm. His measured path to success is a fascinating one, but I especially enjoyed hearing how he sets his priorities with a single question to himself, regardless of whether it’s a personal or professional setting… I’m going to be asking this one myself in every situation from now on.

PLAYLIST – Late Night Jazz on Spotify

I’m not a super big jazz fan, but my massage therapist was playing this in the room last time I had a treatment and I asked for the link. This is now my go-to list when I want to write to something both calm and energizing, without words to distract me. Weirdly enough, jazz always makes me think of Christmas, and who doesn’t need more Christmas in their life?

DRINK – Numi Rooibos Chai

I am absolutely obsessed with this tea. I don’t do caffeine, and all the herbal chai teas I’ve tried have been weak or too sweet. Not this one. It’s robust, spicy, and can stand up to a generous splash of almond-coconut creamer (with a slightly less generous dollop of raw honey). I’ve gone through an 18-count box in two weeks… it’s my new go-to when I need a little pick-me-up but don’t want to spend the calories on a snack.

TV SHOW – Stumptown (ABC)

I DVR’d this season and started late, so I’m just now caught up with the season, and I’m loving this quirky but surprisingly deep show about a female ex-Army intelligence officer turned Portland private investigator. She suffers from PTSD that she’s not addressing…so if you related to Grace in London Tides, you’re probably going to enjoy the tough-but-damaged Dex, played by Avengers favorite Cobie Smulders. For me, the show’s highlight is the warm, sweet friendship between ex-car thief and bar owner, Gray, and Dex’s younger brother, Ansel, who has Down Syndrome. The cases are more weird than intense, as befits the Portland setting, though do be aware of the sexual situations which form some of the show’s conflict, especially if you’re a sensitive viewer or watch with teens or kids. Overall, though, Stumptown features smart, witty writing, well-rounded characters, and a surprising amount of heart, and it keeps getting better with each episode.

A Writer’s Life: Robin W. Pearson

,

Happy 2020, friends! I’m excited to kick off the new year by introducing debut author Robin W. Pearson! It’s been a long time since I’ve been so excited about a novel, partly because Robin’s writing, even in blog posts, is so beautiful I just know something delightful awaits us in A Long Time Comin’… and from the sound of it, it’s more than worth the wait.

Join me in welcoming Robin to the blog, and don’t forget to read to the bottom for your chance to win your own copy of this fabulous debut!

A Writer’s Life by Robin W. Pearson

My folks built their home when I was five years old, and they never left it. My old bedroom is one of the places where my own little people sleep when we visit. The house is five minutes away from everything else in my hometown, and I can find the bathrooms, the utensil drawer, and my old dolls with my eyes closed. We still can’t set foot in my mama’s front room without a building permit. Home, sweet home.

But God designed a different blueprint for me. Since I vowed “I do” twenty-five years ago, Hubby and I have staked a claim in a few states, from the land of ’gators to the home of the Freedom Trail. Though this wasn’t what I expected, planned, or even wanted at first, each move has been chock full of blessings and lessons.

Over two years ago, we decided to relocate one last time back to North Carolina, and we figured on living precisely three carefree months in corporate housing before settling in our permanent location. Oh, the plans we weave….! After nine of us and a dog spend four months in that apartment, three weeks in a hotel, and over one year in a rental, we’re finally taking down our partridge in a pear tree and moving to our forever home—at least until God says go.

My writing journey reads much like our family’s adventures in real estate. And let me tell you, the final chapters look a lot different from the outline. During the past twenty years, my debut novel’s title changed, characters came and went, the middle became the hook, and the original beginning took a hike. I’ve composed more query letters than I care to think about, reduced my magnum opus into a one-page synopsis, and blogged about my faith and family. Oh, the pitches I’ve delivered and the ideas I’ve ditched! I’ve celebrated, commiserated, and reevaluated, and then started that process over and over again, toting more doubts and fear than I had the first go-round. Nothing about this path’s beginning, middle, and end looks at all like I expected, perhaps because it’s hard to see it over the heads of my seven not-so little people.

And I thank God for it.

While I have no idea where I’ll store my utensils, I’m glad God has a way of upending my carefully laid plans. Of rewriting endings and twisting plotlines. Of packing more into an experience than I thought I could ever fit. I wouldn’t dare close my eyes because I’d surely trip over a box of books, but glory be, one of those novels is A Long Time Comin’. Learning to walk, wait, and write by faith has taught me to place my plans, dreams, and hopes in my wide-open palm. That way God can shift, redesign, work and yes, move my plans and me without having to pry open my tightly clutched fingers. Or maybe I just won’t tape the box shut.

Robin W. Pearson’s writing sprouts from her Southern roots, her faith, and her love of her sweet husband, seven children, and her dog, Oscar. All lend authenticity to her debut novel, A Long Time Comin’. After graduating from Wake Forest University, she has corrected grammar up and down the East coast in her career as an editor and writer that started with Houghton Mifflin Company twenty-five years ago. Since then she has freelanced with magazines, parenting journals, textbooks, and homeschooling resources. Follow Robin on her blog, “Mommy, Concentrated,” where she shares her adventures in faith, family, and freelancing.
